Appendix
The appendix (vermiform appendix) is a blind tube connected to the caecum. The caecum is a pouch-like structure of the colon, located at the junction of the small and the large intestines. The appendix has been called a vestigial organ.
Appendicitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the appendix. The pain of appendicitis starts in the umbilicus and shifts to the right lower abdomen.

Appendicitis is a medical emergency that requires prompt surgery to remove the appendix. Left untreated, an inflamed appendix will eventually burst, or perforate, spilling infectious material into the abdominal cavity. This leads to peritonitis, a serious inflammation of the abdominal cavity's lining (the peritoneum) that can be fatal unless it is aggresively treated with higher antibiotics and surgery.
