Diabetes usually refers to diabetes mellitus, a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood glucose levels over a prolonged period.
According to WHO, a person can be labelled as a diabetic if one or more of the following criterias are satisfied
1) Fasting blood glucose > 125mg/100ml of blood
2) Post prandial blood glucose > 200mg/100ml of blood
3) HbA1C > 6.5
Diabetes mellitus type 1 - A form of diabetes mellitus that results from auto-immune destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas
Diabetes mellitus type 2 - A metabolic disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency
